Set in the Tower of London during the reign of Henry VIII, The Yeomen of the Guard is the finest and most serious of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. A wrongly condemned nobleman is sprung from prison hours before his execution, disguises himself as the newest Yeoman at the Tower, and falls in love with his own wife…who has never met him. An itinerant jester, a Yeoman’s flirtatious daughter, abhorrent admirers, and convoluted schemes complete the scene. Both Gilbert and Sullivan named The Yeomen of the Guard as their favorite opera in their collaboration.
